Overview
Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) is a public university in Dumki Upazila, Patuakhali District, about 15 kilometres north of Patuakhali town. It gained university status in 2000 and is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh. It is the only science and technology university in Barishal Division, and the first public university there.
Where it stands
- Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027: position 22 among Bangladeshi universities, computed from the published methodology.
- QS Asia University Rankings 2026: band 801-850, which is 26th nationally in that edition.
The research data stored by Ulkaa for 2025 shows 417 indexed works in that year and 1,949 over the five years to 2025, with 26,520 citations in the same five-year window. The university's h-index is stored as 120 for 2026. About 45 percent of its recent works have an international co-author (0.4508 in 2025). The 2023 record shows 1,212 new students admitted. Ulkaa lists 12 programmes for the 2027 edition.
The university's official site is pstu.ac.bd.
PSTU began in 1972 as Patuakhali Agricultural College. For nearly three decades it taught agriculture at college level, and in 2000 it was upgraded to a university under its present name.
The main campus covers 97 acres in Dumki. A second, outer campus has been set up at Babuganj in Barishal District, and residential halls for male and female students exist on both. The central library holds roughly 45,000 books and gives access to international e-journals and databases through library consortiums.
The university has not used another official name since it became a university, so there is no former university name to record. Its agricultural college origin is the main part of its history, and farming, fisheries and animal science still shape the faculty list today.
Admission
PSTU is a public university, so admission to its undergraduate programmes is competitive and runs through an admission process announced by the university each cycle. The announcement sets the eligibility rules, the application window, the unit or faculty structure and the test details, so read the current circular on the official website before applying.
The 2023 record shows 1,212 new students admitted across all programmes. Applicants who want agriculture, fisheries or veterinary-type programmes should check the subject requirements in the circular, because they are not the same as for business or law.
Ulkaa does not state tuition figures on this page. Fee information is handled separately with sourced current-year data.
Programs
PSTU teaches through eight faculties: Agriculture; Computer Science and Engineering; Business Administration; Fisheries; Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine; Environmental Science and Disaster Management; Nutrition and Food Science; and Law and Land Administration.
The programmes Ulkaa lists include the BSc (Hons) in Agriculture, BSc in Fisheries (Hons), BSc in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, BSc in Nutrition and Food Science, BSc in Environmental Science and Disaster Management (Hons), BSc in Computer Science and Engineering, Bachelor of Business Administration and LLB (Hons). Master's programmes in the stored list include MS in Climate Smart Agriculture, MS in Food Microbiology and Safety, MS in Environmental Science, and MS in Post-Harvest Technology and Marketing.
The subject mix is unusual for Bangladesh. A coastal district university teaches climate-smart farming, fisheries and disaster management next to computing and law, which suits the delta region it serves.
Research output by field in 2025 was strongest in medicine and health-related work (182 works), followed by engineering (87), business (85) and computer science (50), according to the stored publication data.

Research and campus life
The main campus in Dumki is a residential, largely rural setting, about 15 kilometres from Patuakhali town, so most students live in the university halls. Residential halls serve both male and female students on both campuses.
The central library, with about 45,000 books, is the main study space, and library consortium access gives students and teachers online journals. The university enrolled about 3,000 students with 209 academic staff by one recent count, which makes it a small and close campus compared with the large metropolitan universities.
Because the campus is far from a large city, daily life centres on the halls, classrooms, fields and labs. Students interested in clubs, sports and cultural programmes should check the official site for the current list.
