How the Ulkaa Edu Rank works

Overview

Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, usually called RUET, is a public engineering university in Rajshahi, in the north-west of Bangladesh. It has held university status since 2003 and sits on a campus of about 152 acres.

Rankings

  • Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027: position 6 overall and 6 among public universities. The position reflects Ulkaa's admission competitiveness assessment. In the subject tables RUET is 6 in engineering and 6 in computer science and engineering.
  • THE World University Rankings 2027: band 1401-1600 (the 2025 edition placed it in 1201-1500).
  • QS World University Rankings 2026: band 1401+.
  • QS Asia University Rankings 2026: 470.
  • Webometrics 2024: 2476.

The university offers 18 programmes in the Ulkaa catalogue, and three of them were listed as BAETE-accredited in 2026.

In national terms, the THE 2027 band is the 17th among Bangladeshi universities listed in that table, the QS World 2026 band is the 9th among Bangladeshi entries, and the QS Asia 2026 position is the 14th. Each ranking measures something different, so a band in one table should not be read against a position in another. The Ulkaa Edu Rank combines indicators such as admission demand and research output, and its full method is published on Ulkaa under methodology 2027.1.

RUET began in 1964 as Rajshahi Engineering College, a college under the University of Rajshahi. It was the second engineering college in what was then East Pakistan.

In 1986 the college was reorganised as the Bangladesh Institute of Technology, Rajshahi, often shortened to BIT Rajshahi. Many alumni and older documents still use that name.

The Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology Act, 2003 turned the institute into a full university in September 2003. The current name is the official one on UGC records, and the university is formerly known as the Bangladesh Institute of Technology, Rajshahi.

Admission

Admission to the bachelor's programmes is through a competitive entrance examination. Applicants should check the official RUET website each year for the circular, eligibility rules, test dates and the list of subjects open to them.

Published figures show how competitive the process is. In 2025 the university had 1,235 seats and 18,277 applicants, which works out to 14.8 applicants per seat. In 2023 the first-year intake was 1,353 students.

This page does not list tuition or fee amounts. Check the university's own notice for the current year.

Intake has grown steadily. UGC data record 1,232 new students in 2021, 1,301 in 2022 and 1,353 in 2023. A rise in seats does not change the fact that applicants outnumber places by a wide margin, so preparation for the entrance test matters.

Programs

Teaching is organised into four faculties, which together hold 14 departments:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Applied Science and Humanities

Bachelor's programmes include architecture, civil engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, electronics and telecommunication engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial and production engineering, mechatronics engineering and urban and regional planning. At the postgraduate level the university awards M.Sc. Engg., M.Engg. and Ph.D. degrees.

The medium of instruction is English.

For applicants choosing between branches, the practical differences are in the department rather than the faculty. The civil, electrical and computer, and mechanical faculties each group several departments, so a student should read the department page for the courses, laboratories and credit structure of the exact subject. Programme counts and accreditation status come from UGC and BAETE records and can change when a new department is approved.

Research and campus life

Research output is strongest in engineering and computing. OpenAlex records for the five years to 2025 count 4,023 works with 39,730 citations, an average of about 9.9 citations per work. Of those works, 1,456 fall in engineering and 444 in computer science.

About one third of the 2025 works had an international co-author (33 percent). The OpenAlex h-index for the university stood at 175 in 2026.

The volume of publications has risen year by year, from 2,345 works in the five years to 2021 to the 2025 figure above. Three programmes carried BAETE accreditation in 2026, which covers the quality of engineering teaching rather than research.

Beyond engineering and computing, the same period shows 261 medicine-related works and 106 business works in the 2025 data, a sign that engineers at RUET also publish with health and management partners. The mean citedness over two years was 4.71 in 2026, a measure of how often recent papers are cited.

The campus in Rajshahi has academic buildings, laboratories, workshops, residential halls and recreation facilities on about 152 acres.

UGC figures for 2023 record 6,683 students and 349 teachers, 113 of whom held a PhD. Wikipedia lists roughly 6,484 students in a more recent count, split between undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. The university also enrols international students.

With 6,683 students and 349 teachers in 2023, there were about 19 students for each teacher. The number of teachers with a PhD grew from 90 in 2021 to 113 in 2023.

Details of hall life, sports and cultural events are on the official site and in student notices.
