According to Wikipedia, the story begins in 1998 with the Institute of Management and Information Technology, set up by Sarwar Jahan and Ishrat Jahan, and 1998 is the year Ulkaa records as its founding. The Ministry of Education approved a private university in 2002, and academic activities began in January 2003.

Under the rules of the time the university had to set up a permanent campus within five years. Land was bought by 2010 and construction began in 2017, after several deadline extensions.

SUB runs its own admission for each session. Applicants pick a programme from the departments above and meet the eligibility rules posted on southern.edu.bd. The 2023 first-year intake was 927. Pharmacy, law and engineering programmes may have extra subject requirements, so read the current circular carefully.

Wikipedia lists nine departments: Business Administration (BBA, MBA, EMBA and hospitality and tourism management), Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Pharmacy, Law, English, and Islamic Studies. Ulkaa records three accredited programmes for 2026: BSc in Civil Engineering (BAETE), LLB (Honours) (Bangladesh Bar Council) and Bachelor of Pharmacy (Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh).

The 2023 figures show 116 teachers, 25 of them with a PhD.

The campus is in the city of Chattogram, which suits students who live at home or nearby. Student numbers were 2,138 in 2021, 2,256 in 2022 and 2,488 in 2023, a slow rise. For hostels, clubs and transport, ask the university directly.
