United International University

United International University (UIU) is a private university in Dhaka, established in 2003 with the support of the United Group. Its permanent campus covers 8.25 acres at Satarkul in Badda, next to Madani Avenue. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh.

The 2023 figures stored by Ulkaa show 7,224 students and 350 teachers, 87 of whom hold a PhD. UIU admitted 3,591 new students in 2023, 3,647 in 2022 and 1,592 in 2021. Three programmes held professional accreditation in 2026: two engineering programmes accredited by BAETE and one pharmacy programme accredited by the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh. Ulkaa lists 11 programmes for the 2027 edition.

UIU was founded in 2003 and was backed by the United Group, a Bangladeshi business group. It started in rented premises in Dhaka and later moved to its own permanent campus at Satarkul, Badda, a site of 25 bigha, which is about 8.25 acres.

Growth since then has been quick. Ministry data stored by Ulkaa shows 4,759 students in 2021, 8,024 in 2022 and 7,224 in 2023, and the number of teachers rose from 234 in 2021 to 274 in 2022 and 350 in 2023. The university has not used another official name, so there is no former name to record.

UIU is also home to research centres in areas such as energy, biomedical engineering and emerging networks, which sit alongside its teaching departments.

When comparing programmes, check which school the programme sits in and whether it carries professional accreditation. Engineering and pharmacy accreditation can affect later registration, and business programmes follow ACBSP standards.

UIU teaches through four schools:

• School of Science and Engineering, with EEE, CSE, Civil Engineering and Data Science
• School of Life Sciences, with Pharmacy and Biotechnology
• School of Business and Economics, with BBA and Economics programmes
• School of Humanities and Social Science, with English, Journalism and Development Studies

The programmes Ulkaa lists include the BBA, MBA and EMBA, BSc in Civil Engineering, BSc in CSE, BSc in Data Science, BSc in EEE, Economics, English and the Bachelor of Pharmacy. Its business programmes are recognised by ACBSP, its engineering programmes by the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh, and pharmacy by the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh.

On the stored figures, UIU had about 21 students per teacher in 2023 (7,224 students and 350 teachers), and about a quarter of its teachers held a PhD. The university reports 320 full-time and about 100 adjunct teachers on its own count.

The Satarkul campus is urban and compact, close to Madani Avenue in the Badda area of northeast Dhaka. Most students come from across the city, so campus life is built around classes, labs and student societies more than around residential halls.

The campus has electrical and electronics laboratories, computing facilities and a central library of about 40,000 items. Students in computing and engineering work in the labs, and the research centres give some of them a route into project work.
