North South University

North South University, known as NSU, is a private university in Dhaka. It was established in 1992 under the Private University Act and teaches at a campus in Bashundhara, where classes moved in 2009. Wikipedia puts enrolment at about 26,000 students.

NSU was established in 1992 under the Private University Act.

The foundation stone of the permanent campus in Bashundhara was laid on 30 January 2003 by the then prime minister, Begum Khaleda Zia. Classes moved to the new campus on 9 June 2009.

Since then the university has added research units. The NSU Genome Research Institute began in 2017, and the university also hosts a Global Health Institute and a Confucius Institute for Chinese language education. In 2015 its School of Business and Economics became the first business school in Bangladesh to receive ACBSP accreditation from the United States.

Admission to the bachelor's programmes goes through the university's admission process each semester. Read the official NSU circular for application dates, eligibility, the test or assessment format and the programmes open to new students, because requirements can differ by school.

UGC data show how many students enter each year: 5,872 new students in 2021, 7,226 in 2022 and 5,562 in 2023. Tuition and other fee amounts are not listed on this page. Confirm them against the current official notice.

NSU's Ulkaa score draws on 65.5 percent of the indicators, a lower coverage than the other universities Ulkaa reviewed in this batch, so it is best read alongside the other rankings above.

The Ulkaa catalogue lists 18 programmes for the 2027 edition. They include architecture, BBA, MBA and EMBA, civil and environmental engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, economics, English and modern languages including an MA in English, law, microbiology, mathematics and physics, and pharmacy with MPharm tracks in pharmaceutical technology and in pharmacology and clinical pharmacy.

In 2026 four programmes held accreditation: three BAETE-accredited engineering programmes (including computer science and engineering) and the Bachelor of Pharmacy under the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh.

NSU's research units include the NSU Genome Research Institute, founded in 2017 and described by Wikipedia as the first genomic research institute in Bangladesh, and a Global Health Institute. The university also hosts the Confucius Institute for Chinese language education.

OpenAlex publication counts for NSU are not in the Ulkaa data for this edition, so this page does not report citation or output figures. The QS subject tables for 2026 are one outside view of how the university compares in business, economics, electrical engineering and computing.

Teachers with a PhD rose from 274 in 2021 to 314 in 2023, a gain of 40 in two years, and the teacher count rose from 616 to 641 in the same period.

The Bashundhara campus has six buildings with about 1.25 million square feet of floor space. The library has more than 70,000 square feet and, according to Wikipedia, was the first fully automated university library in Bangladesh to use RFID technology.

Wikipedia describes about 26,000 students. UGC data for 2023 record 23,113 students, up from 22,106 in 2021, and 641 teachers, 314 of whom held a PhD. That works out to about 36 students for each teacher.
