Best Private Universities in Bangladesh: Rankings and What to Check

How private universities rank in Ulkaa 2027, QS 2027, THE 2027 and the Asia tables, plus UGC approval, campus and accreditation checks.

Among private universities, BRAC University holds first place and North South University second in the Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 private list, followed by American International University-Bangladesh, East West University and United International University. In the international tables the picture shifts a little: North South University is the private university placed highest in QS World University Rankings 2027 and in QS Asia 2026. A ranking is a starting point, though. Before you apply, confirm UGC approval, the campus, and whether the programme you want is accredited.

How the Ulkaa private list works

The Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027, published on 5 October 2026 with data to 2 October 2026, ranks 43 private universities in a separate private category. The same institutions also carry an overall position among all ranked universities, so the two numbers can differ. BRAC University is first among private universities and ninth overall. North South University is second among private universities and tenth overall.

Those two positions sit inside the first 14 places of the overall table, and positions 1 to 14 reflect Ulkaa's admission competitiveness assessment. Every position below 14 is computed from the published Ulkaa methodology 2027.1. That includes American International University-Bangladesh (third among private, 16th overall, score 71.69), East West University (fourth, 21st, score 61.91) and United International University (fifth, 24th, score 59.36).

The list continues with Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology in sixth place (27th overall, score 56.63) and BGC Trust University Bangladesh in seventh (29th overall, score 55.35). The private category runs down to Britannia University, placed 41 to 50 overall with a score of 9.98. Positions further down are banded, so do not read much into a gap of one or two places between universities with close scores.

One practical note. Daffodil International University and Independent University, Bangladesh appear in several of the international tables below but hold no position in the Ulkaa private list in the stored data. The absence is a data matter, not a verdict on the university.

Why private universities are scored differently

Public universities in Bangladesh run admission tests, so the number of applicants per seat tells you how contested a place is. Private universities mostly admit without a competitive entrance test. Ulkaa has no applicant-per-seat figures for them, and the research behind the ranking found none for any private university.

Zero is not a fair substitute for missing data, so Ulkaa does not score them as zero. It leans on signals that do exist: how much a university's intake has grown, public interest, and ordinal evidence from surveys and news reports. Growth is judged against the private sector as a whole and not against zero, because the whole sector shrank for a time. According to a June 2023 University World News report, private enrolment fell 14.3 percent between 2018 and 2021, and a former UGC chair blamed quality, cost and the arrival of new public universities.

Two older studies add context. A 2019 study of private university students found public universities tend to be the first choice. A 2015 choice-criteria study found that education quality is the foremost factor when students pick a private university. Neither study is a ranking, and both are small samples, so treat them as background.

Intake figures from the UGC annual reports

New admissions come from the UGC annual reports for 2021, 2022 and 2023, as each university reported them. The 2024 report has not been published on the UGC portal. The figures below are first-year intake only, not total enrolment, and a year-to-year jump can reflect a change in reporting as well as in demand.

  • BRAC University: 4,716 (2021), 7,214 (2022), 5,438 (2023)
  • North South University: 5,872 (2021), 7,226 (2022), 5,562 (2023)
  • American International University-Bangladesh: 2,016 (2021), 4,511 (2022), 6,282 (2023)
  • East West University: 2,916 (2021), 4,119 (2022), 4,492 (2023)
  • United International University: 1,592 (2021), 3,647 (2022), 3,591 (2023)
  • Northern University Bangladesh: 2,375 (2021), 4,266 (2022), 6,556 (2023)

Read the pattern with care. BRAC and North South peaked in 2022 and eased in 2023. American International University-Bangladesh and Northern University Bangladesh rose in each of the three years. A large intake does not mean a university is better, and it does not mean it is worse. It does tell you how many students share the same classes, labs and advisers.

Private universities in QS and THE

Only a handful of private universities appear in the world tables, and the bands are wide. These are the stored positions.

  • QS World University Rankings 2027, published 18 June 2026: North South University 901-950 (third in Bangladesh), BRAC University 1001-1200 and Daffodil International University 1001-1200 (joint fourth in Bangladesh), American International University-Bangladesh 1401+ (sixth in Bangladesh). For comparison, the University of Dhaka is joint 600 and first in Bangladesh.
  • THE World University Rankings 2027, published 30 September 2026: North South University, American International University-Bangladesh and Daffodil International University are each 801-1000. BRAC University is 1001-1200, as is the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology. United International University is 1201-1400, Independent University, Bangladesh and International Islamic University Chittagong are 1401-1600, and East West University is 1801-2000. Seven more private universities are listed as Reporter, meaning they supplied data but have no published band.

The Asia tables list more private universities. In QS Asia 2026, published 5 November 2025, North South University is at 149, Daffodil International University at 221, BRAC University at 260, East West University at 491, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology at 518 and Independent University, Bangladesh at 574. In total 21 private universities appear there. In THE Asia 2026, published 25 April 2026, Daffodil International University and North South University share the 351-400 band, BRAC University is 501-600, American International University-Bangladesh is 601-800 and East West University is 801+.

Each table uses its own indicators, so a university can rise in one and fall in another. That is normal and says little about any single student's experience.

UGC approval comes first

A private university in Bangladesh operates under the University Grants Commission and the private university law. The UGC publishes a list of approved private universities on its website. If a name is not on that list, a degree from it may not be recognised for jobs, government service or further study.

Check the exact name as well. Some universities have changed names, and the UGC list gives the current official one. Ulkaa uses the latest UGC name throughout. A university with a similar name that is not on the list is not the same institution.

Also note that the UGC has, at various times, issued warnings about specific institutions and programmes. Look for current notices on the UGC site before paying any admission deposit, rather than relying on a printed brochure.

Permanent campus and location

A permanent campus of its own is a basic sign of a settled institution. Some private universities still operate from rented floors in commercial buildings, while others have moved to a purpose-built campus. Ask the admission office where classes will be held for all four years, and visit if you can.

Location matters for practical reasons too. Of the first seven universities in the Ulkaa private list, five are in Dhaka. BGC Trust University Bangladesh is in Chattogram and, further down, institutions such as Metropolitan University (Sylhet), Varendra University (Rajshahi) and Khwaja Yunus Ali University (Sirajganj) serve students outside the capital. Check the division and city on each university page before comparing.

Programme accreditation

Institution-level rankings say little about a particular degree. Programme accreditation does. In engineering, accreditation comes from the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE). In architecture it comes from the Bangladesh Accreditation Council for architecture programmes, recorded in the Ulkaa data as BAR. In pharmacy it comes from the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh (PCB).

In the stored 2026 data, the private universities together hold 57 BAETE-accredited programmes, 31 BAR and 33 PCB, within a stored total of 132 accredited programmes. Only 48 of the 111 private universities in the dataset have at least one accredited programme at all. Among the leaders, BRAC University has five (three BAETE, one BAR, one PCB), North South University four, American International University-Bangladesh five, East West University six and United International University three. Daffodil International University has nine. All of these are counts as stored for 2026, and a university's own page shows which programmes they are.

If you want a specific degree, such as computer science or architecture, find the accredited programme by name and check that its accreditation has not lapsed. An accredited programme at a lower-ranked university can suit you better than an unaccredited one at a higher-ranked university.

What to verify before you apply

  • The university is on the current UGC list of approved private universities, under its present name.
  • The programme is approved to run, and, where it exists, accredited by BAETE, BAR or PCB.
  • Classes will be held on the permanent campus and not in temporary space.
  • Faculty numbers and the share holding PhDs, which the UGC annual reports record.
  • The ranking edition and year you are relying on, and what each table measures.
  • Costs and waivers, which you should confirm with the university directly and in writing. Ulkaa does not publish fee figures in this guide.

Use Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 to shortlist, the university pages to compare programmes and accreditation, and the UGC site to confirm that a place is lawful to attend.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best private university in Bangladesh?

In the Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 private list, BRAC University is first and North South University second. In QS World University Rankings 2027, North South University is placed highest of the private universities (901-950). Different tables rank differently, so check each edition.

How are private universities ranked in the Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027?

The Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 has a separate private category of 43 universities. Positions 1 to 14 overall reflect Ulkaa's admission competitiveness assessment, and all other positions are computed from the published Ulkaa methodology 2027.1.

Do private universities have an admission test ranking?

Most private universities admit without a competitive entrance test, so applicants per seat are not available. Ulkaa instead looks at intake growth from UGC annual reports and other public evidence.

Which private universities are in QS World University Rankings 2027?

North South University (901-950), BRAC University and Daffodil International University (both 1001-1200) and American International University-Bangladesh (1401+). The edition was published on 18 June 2026.

How do I check if a private university is UGC approved?

Look for it by its current official name on the University Grants Commission's list of private universities. If it is not listed, do not enrol or pay a deposit.

Why does programme accreditation matter?

Rankings describe a whole university. BAETE (engineering), BAR (architecture) and PCB (pharmacy) accreditation tells you whether a specific programme has met an external standard.

Did private university enrolment fall in Bangladesh?

A University World News report from June 2023 said private enrolment fell 14.3 percent between 2018 and 2021. Newer UGC reports show intake rising at some universities, for example American International University-Bangladesh from 2,016 new admissions in 2021 to 6,282 in 2023.
