Overview
Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, or KUET (formerly Bangladesh Institute of Technology, Khulna), is a public engineering university at Fulbarigate on the northwest side of Khulna, roughly 15 kilometres from the city centre. Rankings
- QS World University Rankings 2027: band 1401+, national rank 6. In the 2025 edition it was in 1201-1400.
- QS Asia University Rankings 2026: 414, national rank 11.
- THE World University Rankings 2026: band 1001-1200, national rank 6. No 2027 entry is stored.
- THE Asia University Rankings 2026: band 501-600, national rank 9.
- Webometrics 2024: world rank 3747, national rank 31.
- Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027: position 4 in Bangladesh with a score of 91.5. For positions 1 to 14 the position reflects Ulkaa's admission competitiveness assessment. KUET admits through an HSC GPA screen and its own test, so the applicants-per-seat indicator is treated as neutral for it.
The 2023 data year records 6,081 students and 538 teachers, 132 of whom hold a PhD. Staff numbers have grown over the stored years: 371 teachers in 2021, 463 in 2022 and 538 in 2023, with PhD holders rising from 120 to 123 to 132.
On the QS World table the position moved from the 1201-1400 band in 2025 to 1401+ in 2026 and again in 2027, so the university has slipped a band rather than risen over those editions.
KUET was established in 1967 as Khulna Engineering College. From 1986 to 2003 it operated as the Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT) Khulna, and in 2003 it took its present name as a university.
The stored founding year in our database is 2003, the year it became a university. The engineering college itself is older.
Admission
Admission is competitive. Applicants are first screened by HSC results, then take a test in physics, chemistry, mathematics and English. In the 2025 data year there were 24,527 applicants for 1,065 seats, about 23 applicants per seat.
Wikipedia reports that from 2020 CUET coordinates admission with KUET and RUET. Wikipedia's CUET entry gives about 30,000 applicants for 3,201 combined seats across the three universities. Check the current circular to see how the joint arrangement works for the year you apply.
The stored seat count is 1,065 for 2025, close to the 1,060 first-year places Wikipedia gives for its 16 undergraduate programmes, so most applicants are competing for a small number of seats in each department.
Dates, seat counts and department allocation change each year. Use the official admission notice rather than any third-party figure.
Programs
The university has four faculties with 20 departments, according to its Wikipedia entry:
- Civil Engineering: civil engineering, urban and regional planning, building engineering and construction management, and architecture
- Science and Humanities: mathematics, chemistry, physics and humanities with business
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering: EEE, computer science and engineering, electronics and communication, biomedical and materials science
- Mechanical Engineering: mechanical, industrial and production, leather, textile, energy science, chemical and mechatronics
About 1,060 freshmen enrol each year across 16 undergraduate programmes. Ulkaa lists 15 programme entries, among them architecture, civil engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, electronics and communication engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical, leather, mechatronics and textile engineering.
Three research institutes support graduate study in information technology, disaster management, and environmental and power technology.
