Best Engineering Universities in Bangladesh: 2027 Rankings and How to Choose

BUET, KUET, CUET, RUET, DUET and private universities compared by Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027, QS and THE editions, BAETE accreditation and demand per seat.

Bangladesh has one engineering university at the top of every table, four more public engineering universities in Khulna, Chattogram, Rajshahi and Gazipur, and a growing set of private universities with accredited programmes. In the Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is first, followed by KUET (4), CUET (5) and RUET (6). Rank is one input. Programme accreditation, department strength and your own score matter just as much.

Which universities offer engineering

Engineering degrees in Bangladesh come from four kinds of institution.

Military and international institutions also teach engineering. Military Institute of Science and Technology and Islamic University of Technology both appear in the data with accredited programmes, but their admission routes differ from the public circulars described below.

Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 for engineering

The Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 edition was published on 5 October 2026 with data to 2 October 2026. Positions 1 to 14 reflect Ulkaa's admission competitiveness assessment. Other positions are computed from the published Ulkaa methodology 2027.1.

Among institutions with an engineering focus, the stored positions are:

  • BUET: 1 (score 96)
  • KUET: 4 (score 91.5)
  • CUET: 5 (score 90)
  • RUET: 6 (score 88.5)
  • DUET: 25 (score 59.17), computed from the methodology
  • Among private universities, BRAC University is 9 and North South University 10 (both in the assessed top 14), American International University-Bangladesh is 16 and Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology is 27.

The gap between RUET at 6 and DUET at 25 is partly a difference of method. The first 14 places reflect an admission competitiveness assessment, while DUET's place comes from indicators computed under the published methodology. Both are legitimate, but they answer slightly different questions, so a student weighing RUET against DUET should look at departments and seats rather than the number alone.

These are overall institution positions, not engineering-only tables. Ulkaa does not publish a reliable engineering subject ranking yet, so do not read a position here as "best for civil" or "best for CSE".

World and Asian rankings

International tables give a second, independent view, though most Bangladeshi universities sit in wide bands.

In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published 18 June 2026, BUET is placed 711-720, the second Bangladeshi entry nationally. North South University is 901-950. BRAC University is 1001-1200, and KUET, CUET and American International University-Bangladesh are in the 1401+ band. In the THE World University Rankings 2027, published 30 September 2026, BUET is in 1001-1200, while RUET and CUET are in 1401-1600.

The Asia tables list more engineering names. In QS Asia 2026, published 5 November 2025, the stored positions are BUET 165, CUET 385, KUET 414, RUET 470 and DUET 486. In THE Asia 2026, published 25 April 2026, BUET is 301-350, with KUET and CUET both in 501-600.

Treat bands as bands. A university in 1401+ is not ranked one place below one in 1201-1400 in any meaningful sense.

QS subject rankings 2026 for engineering fields

QS subject tables, published 25 March 2026, are narrower and more useful when you already know your field. Bangladeshi entries are few.

  • Petroleum engineering: BUET 101-150, CUET 151-175.
  • Electrical and electronic engineering: BUET 301-350, North South University 401-450, University of Dhaka 501-550.
  • Mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering: BUET 351-400, University of Dhaka 501-575.
  • Computer science and information systems: BUET 451-500, Daffodil International University 501-550, North South University and University of Dhaka 551-600, American International University-Bangladesh 651-700.
  • Architecture and built environment: BUET 201-260.

A missing name means that university was not listed in that table in the stored data, not that its programme is weak. Civil, chemical and textile engineering have no stored QS subject row here.

How engineering admission works

Public engineering admission is separate from the general university admission clusters. BUET, KUET, CUET and RUET each run their own test. Recent reports describe a common shape: a cut on HSC results decides who may sit the test, and the test result then produces the merit list.

Reported figures for 2025-26 show the shortlist step. BUET shortlisted 10,351 candidates, of whom 9,051 sat its main test on 10 January 2026. CUET reported a shortlist of 16,000 by HSC result, and RUET made the top 19,000 by HSC eligible. KUET's reports describe a multiple-choice paper marked out of 500, with a drawing test for architecture.

Each university publishes its own circular with eligibility, subject requirements, dates and seat counts. BUET offered 1,309 seats across 13 departments in five faculties in the 2025-26 reports. Read the official circular for your year, because eligibility rules and test formats change.

Demand per seat

Applicant counts per seat show how crowded the entrance is, with a caveat about definitions. The figures below are from news reports for the 2025-26 session, and each counts something slightly different.

  • BUET: 10,351 shortlisted candidates for 1,309 seats, or 7.9 per seat. Total applications were not found, so the real pool is larger.
  • KUET: 24,527 applicants for 1,065 seats, about 23 per seat, reported as a record.
  • RUET: 18,277 applicants for 1,235 seats, 14.8 per seat (about 12.6 on those who sat the test).
  • CUET: 13,942 candidates taking the test for 931 seats, about 15 per seat.

A higher ratio does not make a university better, and BUET's lower figure reflects a shortlist before the main test, not an easier entrance. Use the numbers to plan how many universities to apply to. Earlier figures show the pool moves from year to year: BUET's 2023-24 report counted 6,039 candidates who sat the main test, shortlisted from 15,443 preliminary-test takers, so compare sessions only after checking what each number counts. Reports for KUET also noted that the previous record was 13,100 applicants.

Private universities and BAETE accreditation

Private universities set their own admission requirements, tests and dates, so the accreditation check matters more there.

BAETE is the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education, and it accredits individual programmes, not whole universities. Ulkaa stores the accredited programme count for 2026. These are the stored counts, not a complete BAETE register:

  • BUET 1, KUET 3, RUET 3, CUET 1, with no stored count for DUET.
  • Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology 6 and Military Institute of Science and Technology 6.
  • Daffodil International University 4 and Independent University, Bangladesh 4.
  • North South University 3, BRAC University 3 and American International University-Bangladesh 3.
  • Islamic University of Technology 2.

The low stored figures for the public universities should not be read as "few accredited departments". BUET alone lists 13 programmes in the data. Use the stored count as a prompt to check BAETE's own list for the exact department you want.

Accreditation matters because it is an external check aimed at engineering teaching specifically. A university-wide ranking mixes research, reputation and size, which say little about one department's classrooms and laboratories. A programme listing tells you that this particular degree has been assessed as a programme.

When you read a university's accreditation claim, look for three things. Is the programme named, such as BSc in Civil Engineering? Is it accredited now, with a period or year? And does the accreditation cover the campus and shift you will attend?

What to check besides rank

A rank cannot tell you whether a specific department fits you. Before you decide, check:

  • The department, not the university. Compare the departments you could actually enter on your score.
  • Accreditation of that programme on BAETE's list.
  • Faculty and research. The data records teacher counts, PhD teachers and engineering output. For BUET, 804 teachers with 370 holding a PhD were recorded in 2023, and 2,323 engineering works in 2025.
  • Location and living cost. KUET, CUET, RUET and DUET are outside central Dhaka.
  • The circular for your year, including HSC requirements and reserved seats.

Seat numbers deserve a second look too. KUET offers 1,065 seats, RUET 1,235, CUET 931 and BUET 1,309 in the 2025-26 reports. A larger intake spreads applicants over more places, but a university's total says little about your odds in a particular department, because every department fills by its own merit list.

Keep a short list that mixes a reach, a realistic target and a safe option. Rankings tell you where a university stands, and the circular and the programme list tell you whether you can get in and what you will study.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best engineering university in Bangladesh?

In the Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027, published 5 October 2026, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is first. KUET is 4, CUET 5 and RUET 6. Positions 1 to 14 reflect Ulkaa's admission competitiveness assessment.

What are the four engineering universities in Bangladesh besides BUET?

They are KUET in Khulna, CUET at Raozan near Chattogram, RUET in Rajshahi and DUET at Gazipur. Each runs its own admission test and publishes its own circular.

What is the QS ranking of BUET?

In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published 18 June 2026, BUET is placed 711-720. In QS Asia 2026 its stored position is 165.

How many applicants compete for each seat at KUET, RUET and CUET?

News reports for 2025-26 give about 23 per seat at KUET (24,527 applicants for 1,065 seats), 14.8 at RUET (18,277 for 1,235) and about 15 at CUET (13,942 candidates for 931 seats). Each report counts applicants slightly differently.

What is BAETE accreditation?

BAETE accredits individual engineering programmes, not whole universities. Check that the exact degree, such as BSc in Civil Engineering, is on the current BAETE list for the campus you will attend.

Which private universities have accredited engineering programmes?

Ulkaa stores 2026 counts of 6 for Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, 4 each for Daffodil International University and Independent University, Bangladesh, and 3 each for North South University, BRAC University and American International University-Bangladesh. Confirm the programme on BAETE's own list.

Does a high university rank mean the engineering department is better?

Not necessarily. The Ulkaa and world tables rank whole institutions. For one field, look at QS subject rankings 2026, the programme's accreditation and the department's faculty.
