Best Universities for CSE in Bangladesh: Rankings, Accreditation and Choices
Compare Bangladeshi universities for CSE using QS subject 2026, Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027, BAETE accreditation, research output and faculty data.
On this page
A good CSE choice in Bangladesh depends on three things at once: how a university is ranked, whether the programme is accredited, and what it has in labs and teachers. In the stored data, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology is the only Bangladeshi institution with a QS subject band better than 500 for computer science, and it holds position 1 in Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027. Private universities such as North South University, BRAC University and Daffodil International University also appear in the evidence below. No single table settles the question, so this guide shows what each source says and where it stops.
How many universities offer CSE
In the Ulkaa data, 66 institutions list at least one Computer Science and Engineering style programme. Of these, 28 are public universities, 36 are private, one is the international Islamic University of Technology and one is the special-category Military Institute of Science and Technology. The programme names vary: CSE, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science and Computer Network and Cyber Security all appear in the lists.
That spread is why a rank alone misleads. A university can sit high overall because of medicine or business and still run a young CSE department. The reverse also happens. So treat the university tables below as a way to build a shortlist, then test each name against the programme itself.
What the subject ranking says
The most direct evidence is the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, Computer Science and Information Systems, published 25 March 2026. The stored Bangladeshi entries are:
- Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology: 451-500
- Daffodil International University: 501-550
- North South University: 551-600
- University of Dhaka: 551-600
- American International University-Bangladesh: 651-700
Five institutions is a short list. Any university absent from it was not ranked in that subject table, which says nothing about teaching quality. QS bands are also wide, so two universities in the same band cannot be put in order.
Whole-university rankings for CSE-listing universities
Subject tables are sparse, so most readers also look at overall rankings. Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 is the edition published 5 October 2026 with data to 2 October 2026. Positions 1 to 14 reflect Ulkaa's admission competitiveness assessment; the other positions are computed from the published Ulkaa methodology 2027.1. Among the universities that list a CSE programme, the positions run as follows:
- Public: BUET 1, University of Dhaka 2, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology 4, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology 5, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology 6, Jahangirnagar University 7, Bangladesh University of Professionals 11, Jagannath University 13
- Private: BRAC University 9, North South University 10, American International University-Bangladesh 16, East West University 21, United International University 24, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology 27
On the world tables, the QS World University Rankings 2027, published 18 June 2026, place University of Dhaka at joint 600, BUET at 711-720 and North South University at 901-950. BRAC University and Daffodil International University are at 1001-1200, and Jahangirnagar University and American International University-Bangladesh are at 1401+. In the THE World University Rankings 2027, published 30 September 2026, North South University, Daffodil International University and American International University-Bangladesh sit in the 801-1000 band, while BUET, University of Dhaka and BRAC University sit in 1001-1200.
Note the mismatch between tables. Daffodil does not hold an Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 position in the stored data, yet it is in both the QS subject table and the world tables. Different tables measure different things.
Accreditation and BAETE
Accreditation checks a programme against published standards, which a ranking does not do. For engineering degrees in Bangladesh the body most students meet is BAETE, the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education, which works under the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
In the stored accreditation lists, 16 of the 66 CSE-listing institutions show a BAETE-accredited computer programme: 15 private universities and the Military Institute of Science and Technology. They are Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, American International University-Bangladesh (CSE and Computer Engineering), Bangladesh Army University of Science and Technology, Saidpur, BRAC University, Daffodil International University, Dhaka International University, Green University of Bangladesh, Independent University, Bangladesh, the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology, North South University, Southeast University, Stamford University Bangladesh, United International University, University of Asia Pacific and the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh.
No public university shows a BAETE-accredited CSE programme in this list, and BUET's stored accreditation entry names Civil Engineering only. That does not prove the others lack accreditation, because stored lists can lag the accrediting body's own. It does mean you should ask each department directly and check the current BAETE list before you rely on the word "accredited" in a brochure.
Research output in computer science
The Ulkaa data holds a computer science works count (works_cs) for 2025. It counts publications tied to the institution in that field and says nothing about citations or quality. For CSE-listing universities, the highest counts are:
- University of Dhaka: 818
- American International University-Bangladesh: 816
- BRAC University: 791
- BUET: 754
- Jahangirnagar University: 537
- Khulna University of Engineering and Technology: 463
- Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology: 444
- Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology: 392
Two points matter here. First, two of the top four counts belong to private universities, which shows that a strong research culture in computer science is not limited to old public campuses. Second, counts depend partly on how a university's name is written on papers, and on how many faculty it has in the field, so a larger department will usually post a larger number. Use the figure to see whether a department publishes at all, then look at the department's own faculty pages for the topics and recent papers.
Faculty with doctorates
A teacher with a PhD is not automatically a better teacher, but the share of doctorate holders says something about supervision capacity for thesis work and graduate study. The UGC annual report for 2023, as stored in the Ulkaa data, gives teachers with a PhD against total teachers for the whole university, not for the CSE department:
- Independent University, Bangladesh: 283 of 558
- North South University: 314 of 641
- BUET: 370 of 804
- Jahangirnagar University: 382 of 827
- East West University: 223 of 517
- Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology: 113 of 349
- Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology: 105 of 348
- American International University-Bangladesh: 152 of 526
- Khulna University of Engineering and Technology: 132 of 538
- BRAC University: 264 of 1119
- Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology: 119 of 587
Treat these as a university-wide signal. A university can have a thin ratio overall and a strong CSE faculty, or the other way round. Ask the department how many full-time teachers hold a doctorate and how many are on study leave.
Demand and competition
Demand figures exist for public university admission tests and are mostly not specific to CSE, so they describe how contested a seat is at the university or test unit, not in one department. The numbers come from news reports of each admission cycle.
- BUET: in 2023-24, 6,039 candidates sat the main test for 1,309 seats, 4.6 per seat. In 2025-26, 10,351 shortlisted candidates were reported for 1,309 seats, 7.9 per seat. BUET counts only shortlisted candidates, so its ratio cannot be compared with other universities' application counts.
- Khulna University of Engineering and Technology: 24,527 applicants for 1,065 seats in 2025-26, about 23 per seat.
- Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology: 18,277 applicants for 1,235 seats in 2025-26, about 14.8 per seat.
- Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology: 13,942 candidates for 931 seats in 2025-26, about 15 per seat.
- University of Dhaka: the science unit (ka) drew about 119,000 applicants for 1,851 seats in 2025-26, 64.3 per seat. CSE is one of several departments in that unit.
No applicant data was found for private universities, which admit on their own tests and results. For them, check how many CSE sections run per semester and how large they are.
What to check besides rank
Rank gets you to a shortlist of five or six. These checks pick between them:
- Curriculum. Look for data structures, algorithms, operating systems, databases and networks as required courses, and see how recently the elective list was revised. Software engineering, machine learning and security electives are worth noting.
- Labs and equipment. Ask whether students have their own seats in the lab or share, and what the lab hours are.
- Accreditation. Ask for the BAETE status in writing and the intake year it covers.
- Faculty. Read the department page. Count full-time teachers in CSE, not just the university total, and note their recent papers.
- Thesis and projects. Find out whether undergraduates can do research under a supervisor, and look at past project lists.
- Graduate paths. Look at where recent graduates went: local software firms, banks, universities abroad or their own start-ups. A department should be able to show this.
- Transfer and credit rules. If you may switch later, check how credits move.
For each university named above, its profile page lists the programmes, rankings and metrics with their years, so you can compare on one page.
Making the choice
A student who wants the most competitive public route will look first at BUET, then at the engineering universities in Khulna, Chittagong and Rajshahi and the CSE departments at Dhaka and Jahangirnagar. A student who prefers private study will start with the private universities that hold BAETE-accredited programmes and show subject-ranking or research evidence, and then compare each on location, class size and cost, which this guide does not cover.
Whichever route you take, note the edition and year of every ranking you read. A table from a previous year is a different table, and a band such as 551-600 is a range and not an exact position.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best university for CSE in Bangladesh?
No single table decides it. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, Computer Science and Information Systems (published 25 March 2026), BUET has the best stored Bangladeshi band, 451-500. In Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 it holds position 1. Check the programme-level details as well.
Which private universities are good for CSE?
In the QS subject table for 2026, Daffodil International University (501-550), North South University (551-600) and American International University-Bangladesh (651-700) appear. Sixteen CSE-listing institutions, mostly private, show a BAETE-accredited computer programme in the stored data; compare them on faculty, labs and curriculum.
Which Bangladeshi universities are in the QS subject ranking for computer science?
Five are stored for the 2026 edition: BUET (451-500), Daffodil International University (501-550), North South University (551-600), University of Dhaka (551-600) and American International University-Bangladesh (651-700).
Is BAETE accreditation necessary for a CSE degree?
It is not a legal requirement for studying, but it shows that a programme was reviewed against published engineering standards. Ask each department for its current BAETE status in writing, because stored lists can lag the board.
Should I choose a public or private university for CSE?
Public universities admit through competitive tests; the stored data shows most BAETE-accredited computer programmes at private universities. Decide on faculty, labs, curriculum and your budget, not on sector alone.
How competitive is BUET admission?
In 2025-26, 10,351 shortlisted candidates were reported for 1,309 BUET seats, about 7.9 per seat. Because BUET counts shortlisted candidates only, do not compare that ratio directly with other universities. The figure covers all departments, not just CSE.
Does the share of PhD teachers matter for a CSE student?
It matters most if you plan a thesis or graduate study, since supervision capacity depends on it. The 2023 UGC figures stored in Ulkaa cover whole universities, so ask the CSE department for its own count of full-time teachers with a doctorate.
